The Brew Framework : Fundamental Forces governing the fate of Enterprises

(This is 1st article in the Series leading The Brew Framework, a Capability Maturity Framework, designed to evaluate Enterprises at different levels to improvise their performance to favorable outcomes)

The Brew’s Mission:
To reinvigorate our collective futures with the tools of imagination, purpose, clarity & simplicity to unleash the potentials of systems & structures. The purpose is to speeden the progress and enhance the living of mankind, giving effective solutions to create & share value.

When The Brew set out on realizing its purpose by offering effective solutions to Enterprises, Organisations to create & share value along with enhancing their Need to Exist ratio, Contribution to Impact ratio in the life’s of the consumer, it as well realized the need to tackle a framework level systemic problem, in the light of the following points:

1)    The Lifespan of Enterprises have decreased considerably, along with paradigm shifts in levels of uncertainty, ambiguity, and chaos.

2)    The Enterprise Mortality rate has increased manifolds, increasing its victimisation rate agnostic of the merits of the idea, spirit and value creation, the core pillars of these structures.

3)    Enterprises lack clarity and focus in what they are doing despite there being a plethora of theories, analysis and frameworks to ascertain the present by studying the past.

4)    And most importantly, Enterprises are still clueless for future, leaving The Brew with a discomforting thought that future will possibly only get worse by a status quo present.

This pivoted The Brew to delve deep in understanding the causes of failures and analyzing the Structures for the forces and factors that control and determine the fate of these enterprises and organizations.

After tonnes of research and soul searching, The Brew reached an understanding that there are Basic Fundamental Forces that govern the fate of enterprises (it can definitely be extended to all kind of structures, systems and elements.)

The Brew will divide its realizations in 2 parts:
a) The Nature of these Fundamental Forces and its Applicability
b) The Fundamental Forces and its workings

a) The Natures of Fundamental Forces along with its Applicability:
1) The reason why they are aptly termed as Fundamental is because of their most elemental nature. These forces show up in almost all the structures studied (helping us understand the cause and effect derivations to the ones which have stood the test of time and the ones which didn’t. the contemporary successful and the not so successful and series of thought experiments applied to existing models leading to a conclusive understanding)

2) These forces not only serve as a health check, to infuse relevancy, increase longevity, and rejuvenate the soul of enterprises, but when taken to heart, The Brew believes that these factors can definitely help enterprises to be frontrunners in their respective pursuits, ultimately fulfilling the core mission of everybody’s existence.

3) Locus of Control and Response to Stimuli: These forces are completely within respective locuses of controls, and its undiscretionary application as well states a high response to stimuli contributing to the key success factors of the firm.

4) The Application of these forces leads to a process oriented approach, rather than a Result oriented approach, the difference being, in the latter, the Results are an indicator but not the driver of actions in the path to excellence. The Brew firmly believes getting the process and things that matter in the right quadrant, and the result is just an outcome of the process.

b) The Fundamental Forces and its Workings
Post understanding the nature of these forces, The Brew shall now present them across with their roles as follows:
1) The Purpose of Existence
2) Contribution mapped to Consumer Needs, & Creating Impact with Differential Value
3) Dysfunctionalities in the Structure
4) Staticness over continuum of time

Holistically, these are the 4 forces that govern the lifecycle, lifespan and the Contribution to Impact ratio of any enterprise, organization and structure.

An important point to highlight is that these 4 forces Co - exist at any given point of time, and it is their interplay amongst themselves that results in either favorable or unfavorable conditions, and hence they need to be harnessed wisely.

The lack of these factors (individual and collective) can be attributed to more than 99% of the erstwhile firms, which now don’t exist. And in a similar comparison, the Firms which have stood the test of time along the while maintaining their relevance to the world, these Forces are all the more visible with an exception of some individual forces being less present.

The Brew will explain these forces with brevity, leaving a whole lot of room to read between the lines, but with the liberty, that anything at par with the given understanding shall definitely positively impact our collective futures.

a) Purpose of Existence: The Soul of the Enterprise which defines the unique way in which its wants to Impact the world with its Contribution. The Purpose is the philosophy and belief, which the Enterprise wants to spread and deliver, it’s the path which the Enterprise, as a whole, will set out on, along while making inroads of Acceptances in the Consumer Cycle, with either Re-Instilling the existing set of beliefs, or Instilling a Different & Unique set of Beliefs.

Ideally, the Purpose is a philosophy, which does not have an endpoint, but either gets strong or loses the importance and hence the relevance.

b) Contribution mapped to Consumer Needs, & Creating Impact with Differential Value: In the moments of truth, will the Enterprises realize the validation of their Contribution to Impact ratio to Consumer vis –a- vis the Set of Core Beliefs and Purpose, that it wants to instill.
An important thing to realize, is that Contribution is mapped to Consumer Needs, which essentially means understanding the entire Continuum of Consumer Needs, and then addressing particular Consumer Needs and developing the fulfillment solution of Consumer needs, either through a product, service or a platform. Identification of a Consumer Need at a Meta Level and its fulfillment is very important as it falls in complete alignment to the Purpose of the Firm.

c) Dysfunctionalities in the Structure: While delivering the fulfillment solution of the Consumer Need, the Dysfunctionalities in the structure can either lead to loss of the value creation to the consumer and/or the consumer disbelief in the purpose of the firm. The Dysfunctionality is basically a lack of alignment to the Purpose, or to the Value Creation and Enablement.

Dysfunctionality however does not mean Disjointness. Disjointness is applicable to the micro startup organization, Innovation model etc in the Enterprise model, which effectively means that these will be governed by different set of constraints and metrics, however Dysfunctionality, essentially means lack of alignment and acceptance to Purpose and to Value Creation model of the Enterprise.

d) Staticness over continuum of time:
This force essentially implies to keep the wheels of change in motion by self, either by self-disruption, innovation or by self excercised extinction, offsetting the advantages created in the ecosystem while existing in harmony with the above mentioned forces to create favorable and ambient situation.

These 4 Forces effectively, govern the fundamentals of the Structures, and though a Lack of any one of these forces, only has a Linear Impact, a Collective Lack of these Forces will have an Exponential impact to the health of the firm and ecosystem.

This is the 1st article in the series of 3 articles leading to The Brew Framework, which is a Capability Maturity Framework, build on these fundamental forces, which evaluates Enterprises at different levels to improvise their performance, insulate from external exigencies and harness these forces to favorable outcomes.
